Speech and Hearing Resources
Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals face unique problems regarding communication and determining the best way to utilize residual hearing. Additionally, one must learn some of the basics of amplification, audiology, and speech therapy in order to make informed decisions. Here are a few resources I have discovered to help answer some of the basic questions.
- American Academy of Audiology A wealth of consumer guides - great resource!
- Hearing Screening (Information from ASHA - American Speech-Language-Hearing Association)
- What happens when you fail a hearing screening? Hearing Assessment (Information from ASHA)
- How to Read Your Audiogram A step-by-step introduction to reading your audiogram.
- Audiology and Hearing Aids Page has a long load-time, but it is well worth it! (Resources from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf)
- Hearing Aids 101 Information regarding hearing aids and manufacturers for adults and children.
- SHHH - Self Help for Hard of Hearing People
- Virtual Tour of the Ear
- Beltone Anatomy of the Ear
- Noise Thermometer Excellent graphic from the Sight and Hearing Association regarding the effect of noise on your hearing.
- Better Hearing Institute Great information on hearing loss and hearing loss prevention.
Please be sure to consult with a certified audiologist, speech therapist or an ENT physician before making any final decisions.
