Technology

Lance Middle School uses interactive software, interactive whiteboards, and interactive tools in every classroom. The use of Promethean technology maximizes student engagement, provides direct and immediate feedback to the student about his or her learning, and provides the student the opportunity to learn using the tools of the 21st century digital age. About Promethean

"Promethean's aim is to unlock the potential of human achievement in education and training at all ages around the world. It does so by creating, developing, supplying and supporting leading edge, interactive learning technology and by encouraging the growth of the world's largest online teacher community in this field. In these ways, Promethean is helping bring to life the promise of 21st century learning, improving engagement and results for learners and teachers alike.

Developed for teachers, Promethean's ActivClassroom brings together its interactive display systems (ActivBoard), its learner response system (ActivExpression), and its suite of specialized teaching software (ActivInspire). They change how teachers and classes engage and interact, how students learn and how they are monitored and assessed.

Each House has a set of 30 laptops (COW=Conputers on Wheels) to share among the Hosue teachers. The students are using Chromebooks, iMacs, or PC laptops. Teachers also have the opportunity to check out classroom sets of iPads to use with the students for enhanced learning.

ALEKS Math

Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course she is taking.

ALEKS also provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any Web-based computer for a fraction of the cost of a human tutor.

Currently, we are piloting ALEKS math in the 8th grade Power House with Ms. Fioravanti.

Compass Learning

Compass Leanring is a multi-dimensional assessment allows teachers to quickly assess each student’s achievement level, learning style, interests, and expression style.

Based on the student’s achievement level, not just their grade level, teachers prescribe personalized learning paths for each child. Alignment with State and Common Core Standards is built-in.

Teachers then use Compass Learning's research-based, educator-developed coursework to instruct their students and augment lesson plans. Anywhere-anytime accessibility means students can learn not just at school, but at home or on-the-go.

Teachers can monitor student progress in real-time, to immediately identify the skill and concept mastery of each student. Utilizing the vast array of customizable reports, educators are empowered to make data-driven decisions, and can track student, class, and school achievement.

Teachers can easily modify lesson plans based on each student’s individual progress. This facilitates immediate intervention for underperforming students, and keeps high-achieving students engaged.
